On the last trip I got to hear stories of how innovation happening outside the scope of what we’re asking volunteers to. Pairing that with their incredible sense of compassion, some volunteers have positively changed communities in more ways than one.
We were having problems with one of our programs in West Uganda because it’s on the border of a national park and with been having wildlife such as I’ll elephants and giraffes come into the program and is really destroy a lot of the agriculture that with been doing in that area so one of the volunteers had the idea of around the program the project’s Setting up beehives as the sounds the bees make deter the elephants and other wildlife from coming onto the grounds well we have been planting are agriculture items France festivals etc so now not only do we have that program that other culture program running really well we’ve also found another means of income for the local community. Before this happened The local community were telling us they weren’t wanting volunteers in this area any more due to the fact they were really persuading the wildlife to come closer and destroy all the projects that they were selling some markets so now we’ve got the local Community on our side and really benefiting from the fact the volunteers are in the area. There are appreciating our efforts again and we found a second source of income for them which is fantastic and this is really the difference between this organisation and others as the fact that we work with the local community to ensure that they are benefiting from our efforts because other organisations are just placing volunteers there with no means to improve or create sustainable long-term programs for the local community.
Another thing I’ve noticed as we are having a lot of groups really making change happen in the community is that we working on volunteers no longer just want to come for the experience I really want to come because they want to know and leave knowing that they’ve made a sustainable impacts in the community and for them to be able to go back and see The project is continuing on from where they left off.
We’ve had hospitals renovated because the volunteers we’ve had businesses built such as a micro finance business built with the skills and expertise from a volunteer.
I think the biggest difference I noticed from the this trip compared to last trips is the fact that we are now starting to make a sustainable contribution to the community somewhere and things are slowly starting to come about and get done and finished and is really exciting to see that you know the volunteers are been part of that and kind of all the staff are working together to ensure something sustainable is happening
