We don’t like thinking about death, but doing so makes us think about life, what’s important to us and what we’re just wasting time on.
Stop for a moment and consider how you’ll be remembered. What legacy will you leave? How will people describe you? Will you be someone others will see as an inspiration?
The answers to these questions are determined by what’s important to you, so what is it? Money, career, family or travelling, or are you more focused on Facebook likes, Instagram followers and YouTube subscribers?
These might give you some fleeting satisfaction, but here’s the thing – pursuing pleasure doesn’t make you happy; finding meaning in your life does.
Ultimately what does it matter how much money you earnt, whether you bought a house or not, how much you posted on Facebook and how many friends you collected, if you used the right filters and hashtags on Instagram or how many people subscribed to your makeup tutorial?
So where do you find meaning? Volunteering in Africa is a great way to bring meaning to your life.
“It is better to give than receive” is a phrase you’ve probably heard throughout your life, but it turns out there’s actually something to it. Studies have shown that when people buy gifts for others and donate money to charity, no matter the amount, they are happier, and there are positive effects on the cardiovascular and nervous systems.
Our director, Jess, says that when she returns home from volunteering with those living in poverty, she comes home with a new perspective, she fully knows herself and her purpose in life, and has the drive to have a positive impact on humanity.
We all stand to gain so much more from giving than we do from taking. Consider using the money you earn to help educate a child so they don’t face a life of poverty. Consider using social media to promote a charity. Consider incorporating travel into a volunteer experience in Africa. Today is a great day to really start giving your life meaning so you can help leave this world in a better state.
